How to Check CPU Temperature on Windows

Everything on this page applies to Microsoft Windows PCs and uses free CPUID software: CPU-Z for CPU information and HWMonitor for hardware monitoring.

People often search for "CPU-Z temperature" or "CPU-Z CPU temp". CPU-Z is a CPU and system information tool; the CPUID program built for temperatures, voltages and fan speeds is HWMonitor. Use both together: CPU-Z tells you what the hardware is, HWMonitor tells you how it is running.

Read temperatures step by step

  1. Download HWMonitor for Windows.
  2. Open it and expand your motherboard and processor entries.
  3. Read the Temperatures section for package and per-core values.
  4. Compare Value, Min and Max columns to see idle and load behaviour.

Temperatures under load

To see how hot the system gets while busy, run powerMAX in one window and watch HWMonitor in another. For graph recording and alerts, use HWMonitor PRO.
